Day 8: Overnight Ferry to Oslo
- The Day Distilled: Royal treasures in a 17th century pleasure palace, and the most restful night of the trip.
- Woman of the Day: Sometimes tour group members themselves can be a highlight of a trip. Mom and I had a wonderful conversation on the ferry with one of our travel companions, a hospice nurse who once walked the entire Camino de Santiago. Her life stories, meaningful work, and adventurous spirit were really inspiring.
- Ship’s Log: Overnight ferry!
A royal tour in Copenhagen
This morning we returned to Copenhagen to visit King Christian IV’s 17th century Rosenborg Castle. Guess who was waiting for us in the castle courtyard? Hans Christian Andersen (from Day 4) – this time dressed as Richard, the American expat tour guide.

All aboard!
We said goodbye to Hans/Richard and headed for the port to catch our ferry. There was a road race happening in Copenhagen, which had closed streets and snarled traffic, but Pinge calmly navigated the bus through all the detours and some absurdly tight turns to bring us to the ferry landing, where we had our passports scanned by immigration officials before boarding a great big overnight ferry to Oslo.
Mom and I headed to the upper deck to enjoy views of Copenhagen’s working port as the ferry pulled out. That evening we spent time exploring the ship and getting to know more of our tour companions. When we retired to our cabin and turned off the light, we were quickly lulled into a deep, restful sleep by the distant thrum of the ferry’s engines.
